Using VPN with Mesh Routers
VPN connections to a mesh network may not provide all the expected features. Mesh VPNs are typically used for secured communication between devices owned by individuals or organizations, rather than for anonymizing internet traffic.
Setting up VPN on Mesh WiFi
To use a VPN with mesh WiFi, you can follow these steps:
- Open your router’s firmware in a browser.
- Enable the VPN service.
- Sign up for a free DDNS account.
- Return to the settings for VPN.
- Install a VPN client.
- Rename the network connection for the new VPN network.
- Look for OpenVPN Tap.
Compatible Mesh Routers for VPN
Some mesh routers that work well with VPN include:
- ASUS ZenWiFi XT9
- NETGEAR Orbi tri-band Wi-Fi
Using VPN on Deco Mesh
Deco mesh routers can be set up in PPTP/L2TP client mode to connect to an ISP server and share the internet. Local client devices behind Deco can set up a VPN connection with the external server, but it’s important to check if your ISP allows such connections.
Using NordVPN with Meshnet
To use NordVPN with Meshnet, you can add your personal devices by installing the NordVPN app, logging in with your account, and enabling Meshnet. Up to 10 devices can be connected using the same NordVPN account.
VPN Compatibility with Wi-Fi Networks
Some Wi-Fi networks may block or restrict VPN connections using network or firewall settings. If you encounter VPN connection issues, it is likely due to the network or firewall settings imposed by the Wi-Fi network.
Setting up VPN on Orbi Mesh Router
To enable the VPN service on an Orbi mesh router:
- Launch a web browser on a device connected to your router’s network.
- Access orbilogin.com.
- Enter the router username and password.
- Select Advanced > Advanced Setup > VPN Service.
- Enable the VPN Service.
- Click APPLY.
Meshnet and IP Address Privacy
Meshnet is not a replacement for a traditional VPN, as it is designed for peer-to-peer file sharing and remote access. A traditional VPN, on the other hand, is designed to hide your IP address and protect your online activity from ISPs and other third parties.
Advantages of Mesh WiFi
Mesh WiFi systems offer better speeds than WiFi extenders because routers and satellite nodes are tuned to create a unified network. They also hand-off connections to devices instantly as they move around the home.
VPN Router Recommendations
Some recommended VPN routers include:
- ExpressVPN Aircove
- TP-Link AX6600 WiFi 6 gaming router (Archer GX90)
- Synology RT2600ac
- InvizBox Go
- ASUS ROG Strix AX5400
Using VPN with Google Mesh
Unfortunately, Google Wi-Fi does not have built-in support for VPN connections. Therefore, it is recommended to use a router compatible with Google Wi-Fi if you need to set up a VPN.
NordVPN Split Tunneling
NordVPN offers split tunneling for Android, Android TV, and Windows devices, allowing you to route some traffic through the VPN while accessing other sites directly.
Using Netflix with Meshnet
To use Netflix with NordVPN Meshnet:
- Download and install NordVPN.
- Sign in with your account credentials.
- Enable Meshnet on the desired device within the NordVPN app.
- Devices will automatically discover and connect to each other.
- Enjoy Netflix!
Bypassing Wi-Fi Restrictions with VPN
Bypassing Wi-Fi restrictions using a VPN depends on the network or firewall settings imposed by the administrator. Some networks may block or restrict VPN connections.
VPN connections to a mesh network may not give you all the features you expect. Mesh VPNs are typically used to provide secured communication between devices owned by an individual or organization, rather than for anonymizing internet traffic.

Some ISPs provide internet service based on PPTP/L2TP protocol. In this case, we can set up Deco in PPTP/L2TP client mode to connect to the ISP server and share the internet. Deco supports PPTP/L2TP/IPSec VPN passthrough, and the local client devices behind Deco can set up a VPN connection with the external server.
Add your personal devices
To add more devices to your Meshnet, just install the NordVPN app on the devices you want to connect, log in with your account, and enable Meshnet. They will connect automatically. Meshnet allows you to add up to 10 devices that use the same NordVPN account.
Some Wi-Fi networks do not allow VPN connections and restrict VPN access using network or firewall settings. If this error appears when you connect to Secure VPN for the first time, it could be due to the network or firewall settings.
To enable the VPN service:Launch web browser from a mobile device that is connected to your router's network.Enter orbilogin.com.Enter the router user name and password.Select Advanced > Advanced Setup> VPN Service.Select the Enable VPN Service check box and click APPLY.
However, it's important to note that Meshnet is not a replacement for a traditional VPN. Meshnet is designed for peer-to-peer file sharing and remote access, while a traditional VPN is designed to hide your IP address and protect your online activity from your ISP and other third parties.

When you know how to bypass Wi-Fi restrictions, it's fairly easy. There are different techniques to get past blocked sites, but a VPN usually comes on top of that list. Besides getting past your school's firewall, a VPN will always keep your connection encrypted and hidden from snoops.
Many VPN providers will show a green light or similar icon when a VPN connection is active, and red when there is a problem with the connection. Some VPNs deliberately block internet traffic if they can't connect or there are issues with your internet connection.
Orbi routers have a built-in VPN feature that you can easily activate by logging into your Orbi Management Panel. However, the built-in VPN is primarily designed for remote access and does not offer the same level of network-wide security and features as dedicated VPN services.
To enable the built-in VPN, open the Orbi mobile app or go to orbilogin.com from your computer. Select the Advanced Tab > Advanced Setup > VPN service and tick the box next to Enable VPN.
Meshnet is free even without a NordVPN subscription. Devices belonging to your account will show up automatically.
The biggest downside to a mesh WiFi router system is that you need to keep routers plugged into outlets in multiple rooms of your home. If you live in an apartment, or older house with fewer outlets, this may be hard to justify. It can also be a little off putting to have WiFi routers strewn throughout your house.
Disadvantages of Mesh Topology :It's costly as compared to the opposite network topologies i.e. star, bus, point to point topology.Installation is extremely difficult in the mesh.Power requirement is higher as all the nodes will need to remain active all the time and share the load.Complex process.
It is worth noting that most ISP routers and modems don't support a VPN connection. However, you can combine an ISP modem with a VPN-supported router for a VPN to work. If you're looking for a VPN-supported router, here are a few suggestions that will benefit both home users and SMEs: Linksys WRT 3200 ACM.
Probably. Setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your router is a great way to improve your digital security. You can protect an entire network by connecting all your devices to a VPN router: PCs, laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, and even consoles.
Google Wifi is a home mesh Wi-Fi system that replaces your traditional router and provides seamless, reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. You still need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and a modem to connect to the internet.
Split-tunneling security risks
In addition, if an employee downloads malware, there is a chance an intruder may be able to access the corporate network using the employee's credentials. VPN split tunneling also limits a company's ability to control file sharing.
The most common risk is a DNS leak. Without delving into the technical details, a DNS leak happens when you unintentionally expose the details of your traffic to bad actors. A full tunnel VPN deployment encrypts everything, while split tunneling encrypts only a portion.
